Retribution?

So, no prosecution for those who tortured, or told them to torture, because that would be looking backward to exact retribution. I see. I'm all for eschewing the visceral need for vengeance exhibited by some, but not prosecuting war crimes is wrong. I can see that CIA agents or soldiers who tortured were doing so under orders, but it's not like we said the same thing about Nazi death camp guards. I think that the difference is that we would be prosecuting Americans--not Nazis--and they abused Muslims--not Jewish people. Big difference. So, can I now, under directive from my employer go and kidnap someone and torture them? It would seem so, because prosecuting me after te fact would smell of retribution.

I always like to look at motives. Why did the Bush administration use these tactics when it was known that they didn't produce good information? It has even been compared to methods used by the Soviet Union, not to extract real information, but to extract faulty information that the interrogators wanted to hear so they could use false confessions and statements in propaganda. which brings me to the testimony of Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi. He was captured by the US, sent to Egypt and tortured until he described fictitious links between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda. Did he crack under harsh interrogation? Or did they torture him until he gave them what they needed to justify invading Iraq? Is that what they also wanted from hundreds of guilty--and innocent--inmates in Guantanamo Bay?

I don't trust the neocons. I see them as doing anything with no regard to human rights, laws, or the interests of people of any nation. I also see them as using torture, not to protect the good ol' USA, but to get what they need to further their totalitarian agenda. The end, even a bloody, defiled one, will justify their means. It is amazing that the new and improved Dick Cheney is still trying to use the desolation--environmental, civil and economic--wrought on many people by he and his ilk to justify their aboninable methods and tactics. Remember, these men committed treason along with their lawlessness. It might be a good idea to put ol' Dick on the stand so that we can get the truth instead of a non-stop stream crap from Fox News.
